Miley Cyrus, who has admitted to having romantic lesbian relationships other than the heterosexual ones the public has witnessed, further opened up about her sexuality and gender identity in a recent interview.
Cyrus, 22, has been a staunch advocate for LGBT rights, using her fame and reach to raise awareness for homeless and LGBT youths with her Happy Hippie Foundation. After acknowledging that not all of her previous relationships have been “straight, heterosexual” ones, she said, “The position I’m in, I feel like I’ve got a lot of power. But, so many kids don’t feel that way. They’re under their parents’ rule.”
Further opening up about her own sexuality, Cyrus has suggested that not only does gender not play a part in who she’s attracted to, but also that her own gender isn’t strictly defined.
“I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age,” Cyrus told Paper magazine, admitting she’s had relationships with women that flew under the radar. “Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me.”
“I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl,” she added of her gender identity.
Cyrus, who got her big break on Disney’s Hannah Montana, told her mother Tish Cyrus about her romantic feels toward women when she was 14. Though her mother initially had trouble understanding her sexuality, Cyrus says that she accepts her for who she is.
“I remember telling her I admire women in a different way. And she asked me what that meant. And I said, I love them. I love them like I love boys,” Cyrus said. “And it was so hard for her to understand. She didn’t want me to be judged and she didn’t want me to go to hell. But she believes in me more than she believes in any god. I just asked for her to accept me. And she has.”
Cyrus was last publicly in a relationship with Patrick Schwarzenegger, and was previously engaged to Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth.
