Charlaine Harris, who wrote the novels that inspired True Blood, is in the middle of writing the Midnight, Texas trilogy, which NBC has decided to adapt for the small screen.
NBC has announced that it is developing a drama based on the Midnight, Texas series for fall 2016, reported Entertainment Weekly. Like the novels, it will follow the creepy goings on in the fictional Texas town.
“It’s where humans and the supernatural co-exist, and where everyone has a secret. It’s equal parts humorous, sexy, and downright scary,” says executive producer David Janollari (Six Feet Under). “All the books have great murders at the center. There are these great secrets and great romantic entanglements happening with this big mystery backdrop, though it’s the supernatural that will scare the hell out of you.”
Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse novels were picked up by Showtime in 2008 and got an added boost when Academy Award winner Anna Paquin signed to star as the main character. Janollari isn’t concerned about getting as big of a name to propel the Midnight, Texas series.
“It’s not dependent on above-the-title names to be successful,” he said. “In Charlaine’s books, its first and foremost all about the characters.”
Thus far, Harris has written the first two books in the southern gothic trilogy – Midnight Crossroad and Day Shift, which was released back in May. Ahead of the book’s release, Harris spoke to uInterview about how the Midnight, Texas series compares to the Sookie Stackhouse series.
“The world is the same, but a step away. Midnight is a remote town. There’s only one vampire there. He’s been there for really almost forever,” Harris told uInterview in an exclusive interview. “There’s no involvement in the politics of the various paranormal communities. It’s really more of a return to a conventional mystery but with a few paranormal elements.”
The third book in the Midnight, Texas series – Night Shift – is slated for release next spring. If the Midnight, Texas TV series gets picked up, it will premiere on NBC next fall.
