Michelle Shocked Unleashes Anti-Gay Remarks During Concert, Venues Cancel Her Concerts

Michelle Shocked, singer-songwriter who rose to notoriety in the 80s and 90s, stunned the crowd at her concert at Yoshi’s in San Francisco on Sunday when she launched into an anti-gay rant.

“I live in fear that the world will be destroyed if gays are allowed to marry,” she reportedly said. “You can go on Twitter and say ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates f-gs,’” she concluded, according to Matt Penfield, who live-tweeted the show at her request.

Many former fans of Shocked left the venue following her hateful speech, some of which took to Twitter to voice their disillusionment with the artist. “Wow, she’s a total bigot and said so on stage,” one member of the audience tweeted. “It was unreal. We had to leave. I am so disappointed.”

Furthermore, Shocked has caused her tour to thin considerably over the next few months. In Colorado, eTown Hall has canceled her show that was supposed to take place on May 3, and is offering free refunds to those who bought tickets. In actuality, Shocked has pretty much cleared her entire upcoming schedule, inspiring venues up and down the West Coast to cancel her performances.

“Hiya, folks. Meander's Kitchen will not be hosting Michelle Shocked for her April 26th performance in Seattle due to her homophobic performance in San Francisco last night, during which she actually said ‘God Hates Fags,’” the Seattle venue wrote on their Facebook page. “I'll post more about this later. But no. Just, no.”

Shocked, who has been known for her left-leaning politics, more recently became a born-again Christian. Socially, she’s moved proudly towards bigotry. Having called on Penfield to live-tweet her performance at Yoshi, it seems possible Shocked wanted her vitriol to reach a wider audience – perhaps inspired by DOMA and Proposition 8 being put before the Supreme Court.

It’s uncertain whether or not she expected such collective disapproval with her remarks. Regardless, the universal backlash from venues seems to prove Shocked's opinions are not as popular with Americans as they may once have been – and that maybe the Supreme Court might find it high time to reverse both DOMA and Prop 8.
