First Lady Michelle Obama was reportedly privately critical of the Biden family’s treatment of Kathleen Buhle, the ex-wife of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, after their divorce.

Sources familiar with the relationship between the Obama and Biden families revealed that Obama has expressed frustration over how the Biden clan allegedly “exiled” Buhle after her marriage to Hunter ended. This reported tension is said to be one of the reasons why Obama has not been as actively involved in the campaign for Biden’s current election rematch against Donald Trump, the sources claim.

Obama initially hesitated to campaign for Biden in his first round against Trump four years ago, despite the continued public affection between the two families. Their relationship changed in 2015, according to Axios; this was the year that Biden’s son Beau passed away from cancer as well as the year when Biden considered another run for the presidency – a move that Obama allegedly did not encourage.

The report claims that Obama privately believed that the Biden clan had wronged Buhle. The former first lady had reportedly become close with Buhle in the Obama administration, and the two women have remained friends to this day.

Despite her reported initial reluctance, Michelle did ultimately get involved in Biden’s 2020 White House bid, supporting his campaign through social media posts and a speech at the Democratic National Convention. However, her level of involvement this year has been less extensive compared to that of her husband, former President Barack Obama, who has been more actively involved in Biden’s campaign.

A spokesperson for Obama stated that she supports Biden’s re-election and that “she is friends with Kathleen and the Bidens. Two things can be true.”

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates told The Daily Beast in a statement, “The Biden and Obama families are like family to each other, and whoever made these claims about that relationship isn’t familiar with it. The former president and first lady have been two of the strongest supporters of President Biden’s leadership and agenda.”

The report suggests that Obama’s attention has centered mostly on her nonpartisan voter registration organization When We All Vote, and that her dislike of partisan politics partly explains her reluctance to get more involved in Biden’s campaign.
