Former First Lady Michelle Obama has declared that she will never run for political office.
Obama gave her first speech since leaving the White House, and made it clear that she would never seek public office because she “wouldn’t ask my children to do this again.”
The speech was held at the American Institute of Architecture convention in Orlando. No cameras were permitted during the speech. She wishes to help the country as a private citizen, without being in the political spotlight. She plans to continue her work for young women and girls around world who struggle with education, medical care, economic inequality, and violence.
“It’s good to get out of the house,” she said. “[It’s been] good so far – it hasn’t been that long since we left… it’s good to not have the weight of the world upon your shoulders.”
For the most part, the Obamas have stayed out of the spotlight since Barack Obama left office. Michelle spoke about how she did miss living at the White House, and how it was the one place she had lived in the longest. It was especially hard for their daughters, Sasha and Malia Obama, to say goodbye since they grew up there. “I didn’t want to have tears in my eyes for the new president,” Michelle said, describing leaving the home after the inauguration.
The Obamas plan to remain in Washington D.C. until Sasha graduates from high school in 2019.
