The former first lady Michelle Obama stated that there was a decade in her relationship with her husband Barack Obama where “she couldn’t stand” him.
The former first lady was promoting her new book The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times in which she shares her tools to overcome moments of uncertainty, helplessness and self-doubt.
“People think I’m being catty by saying this – it’s like, there were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband,” she said at a roundtable for Revolt TV. “And guess when it happened? When those kids were little.”
Obama, 58, was speaking with moderator Angie Martinez as well as panelists H.E.R., Winnie Harlow, Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles-Lawson about the work imbalance in their marriage when her husband’s political career was finding early success and she was responsible for taking care of their daughters, Sasha and Malia.
“And for 10 years while we’re trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who’s doing what and what, I was like, ‘Ugh, this isn’t even,'” Obama said. “And guess what? Marriage isn’t 50/50, ever, ever.”
Since then, Obama states that she and her husband refused to give up and worked on their relationship, just recently celebrating their 30th anniversary.
On Instagram, Barack shared pictures of himself with his wife while writing, “Miche, After 30 years, I’m not sure why you look exactly the same and I don’t. I do know that I won the lottery that day—that I couldn’t have asked for a better life partner. Happy anniversary, sweetheart!”
Michelle responded by marking the day with a post to Twitter.
