Michelle Obama revealed in a new interview this week that Melania Trump has never asked her for help on how to improve her role as first lady.
The 54-year-old former first lady’s remarks came during an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts. Obama is promoting her memoir Becoming, which was released on Tuesday.
“Has [Trump] reached out? Roberts asked Obama of the current first lady, after noting that Laura Bush had offered Obama advice when Barack Obama took office in 2008.
“No,” Michelle Obama simply said. “No, she hasn’t.” Obama said that she had offered Melania Trump help in the same way Bush had extended her offer of advice.
“I’m a phone call away,” Obama said Bush had told her.
Melania’s communications director Stephanie Grisham confirmed Obama’s answer in a statement.
“Mrs. Trump is a strong and independent woman who has been navigating her role as First Lady in her own way,” Grisham’s statement read. “When she needs advice on any issue, she seeks it from her professional team within the White House.”

When pressed by Roberts on her opinion of Melania’s performance as first lady thus far, Obama simply responded:
“One of the things you learn as a former [first lady], it’s like, I don’t judge what a current is doing, you know?” Obama said. “So I’d prefer not to, you know, speak on what she’s doing versus what I did because I think every first lady approaches this job differently.”
In Becoming, the former first lady also reportedly says she will “never forgive” President Donald Trump for promoting the so-called “birther” conspiracy theory that her husband was not born in the United States. Trump famously started demanding to see Barack Obama’s birth certificate in 2011 after claiming he suspected him of being born in Kenya.
According to CNN, Michelle Obama and Melania Trump have met in person three times since the 2016 election.
