Michelle Obama reveals in her new book that she will never forgive President Donald Trump for pushing the conspiracy theory that her husband Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States.
In her upcoming memoir Becoming, which will be released on Tuesday, the 54-year-old former first lady writes that she will “never forgive” her husband’s successor for promoting the so-called “birther” theory in 2011 that gained support among many conservatives. Starting that year, Trump was adamant about demanding to see Barack Obama’s birth certificate to prove he was a U.S. citizen by birth.
Trump claimed Obama, 57, was born in Kenya rather than in Hawaii, and that he therefore was ineligible to serve as president. The former Apprentice host also called for Obama to present his college admissions records. The “birther” theory eventually lost traction in 2016, just as Trump was running for president and Obama was nearing the end of his second term in office.

“The whole thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed. But it was also dangerous, deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks,” Michelle writes in her book.
“What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls? Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this I’d never forgive him.”
Trump responded to Michelle’s statements about him by criticizing his predecessor: “I’ll give you a little controversy back, I’ll never forgive [President Barack] Obama for what he did to our U.S. military. It was depleted, and I had to fix it,” Trump said. “What he did to our military made this country very unsafe for you and you and you.”
The former first lady is set to begin a book tour in her hometown of Chicago next week.
