Michael Sam was cut from the St. Louis Rams roster on Saturday along with three other hopefuls.
It was announced Saturday that Sam had not made the Rams 53-man roster after getting picked up by the NFL franchise in the seventh round and becoming the first openly gay man drafted into the league. The University of Missouri alum was beat out for a slot as a defensive lineman by undrafted rookie Ethan Westbrooks, reported ESPN.
Following the announcement, Sam took to Twitter to thank the Rams organization for giving him a shot and to share his plans to continue to pursue a career in the NFL.
Now that he’s been released, Sam is subject to waivers and could potentially get claimed by another NFL team, according to USA Today Sports. If another team were to show interest in the defenseman, he would be on the team’s final roster for the 2014 season. The decision would be made by the end of the weekend.
If Sam isn’t claimed by the end of the weekend, the Rams could pick him up for their 10-man practice squad, where he’d continue to train under the tutelage of the highly respected Jeff Fisher.
