Michael Moore Wants Matt Damon To Run For President

According to filmmaker and political commentator Michael Moore, America needs a new head of state. And he thinks there's no one better to fulfill those presidential duties than outspoken actor and philanthropist Matt Damon. During a virtual townhall sponsored by public action blog, Firedoglake (FDL), the Farenheit 9/11 director stated that Damon's political savvy and bravado make him the man for the job.

"I think that he has been very courageous in not caring about who he offends by coming out and saying the things that need to be said here," Moore said during the FDL discussion. "And if you want to win, the Republicans have certainly shown the way: that when you run someone who is popular, you win."

Who could be more popular than an Oscar-winning actor? Moore thinks Damon can make the Reagan-eqsue transition from the silver screen to the White House. Although Damon himself hasn't expressed interest in running for president, he has been open about his political stance, as it's shifted over the years from an advocate of President Barack Obama, to a harsh critic of his leadership. In an interview with Piers Morgan for CNN, he spoke on his disappointment with the Obama administration's foreign, fiscal and education policies.

"He's misinterpreted his mandate," Damon said. "He's doubled down on a lot of things."

Whether or not Damon will step up to the plate is yet to be seen. And perhaps Moore's use of the actor as a potential candidate was support of his argument for a new Democratic way of thinking.

"I guess I only throw his name out there because I’d like us to start thinking that way," Moore said in the FDL townhall. "I don't really want to spend a lot of time running symbolic campaigns." What Moore does want is for a 21st-century revival of liberal thinking among Democrats. "There really couldn’t be a better time to organize, to run a viable candidate," Moore said. "And to really say the Democratic party has not served us well, so we’re going to Democrats 2.0."
