Michael Dunn Sentenced To Life In Prison For 'Loud Music' Shooting

Michael Dunn has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis. Dunn was convicted of first-degree murder in September, after his initial trial in February ended in deadlock. Dunn was found guilty on three counts of second-degree attempted murder in January. Dunn was sentenced to an additional 90 years in prison for three attempted murder convictions and another 15 years for firing into an occupied vehicle.

At sentencing, Judge Russell Healey addressed Dunn and the courtroom.

"Mr. Dunn, your life is effectively over," Healey said. "What is sad is that this case exemplifies that our society seems to have lost its way."

“Our justice system works,” Healey continued. “This case demonstrates that our justice system does work.”

The incident happened in November of 2012 in Jacksonville, Fla., when in an argument over loud music coming from a teens' SUV, Dunn shot into the vehicle of the four teenagers 10 times. Dunn repeatedly claimed he was acting in self-defense. He told jurors that he saw Davis roll down the window and flash what he believed to be a gun after the two argued. Dunn kept firing at the fleeing SUV to make sure no one shot back at him.

After the shooting, Dunn allegedly drove back to his hotel room, ordered a pizza, walked his dog and went to sleep.

"My life as I had known it was shattered on November 23, 2012," Dunn said in court. "I now call it Black Friday for a completely different reason. After the longest hour of my life, the hospital confirmed that Jordan Russell Davis was deceased in the emergency room…The old Ron Davis died that night with Jordan."

"I want the Davis family to know that I truly regret what happened. If I could roll back time and do things differently, I would," he continued. "I am mortified that I took a life whether it was a justified or not."

Dunn’s character has been repeatedly called into question during the trial. His former neighbor Charles Hendrix said that Dunn was an angry man who was abusive to his ex-wives and spoke of an incident in which Dunn said he wanted a man killed. On the night in question, Dunn had just returned from his son’s wedding. His daughter, Rebecca, disagreed with the assessments, saying her father is a loving man.
