Saturday Night Live cast members Colin Jost and Michael Che are known for their antics on the “Weekend Update” sketch, often trying to embarrass each other on live television. But in honor of April Fools’ Day, Che took things a step further.
The segment started normally, but Jost was noticeably receiving much fewer laughs than his co-anchor Che.
The prank came when Jost told another joke about former President Donald Trump‘s indictment. “At this point, it seems like even pro-Trump people have moved on,” he quipped. “I mean, I went down to the courthouse today, and I was the only protester there.”
The live audience was dead silent with one person shouting, “You stink!” After a few seconds, Jost realized what was happening, and Che explained, “I told them not to laugh at you for April Fools’.”
Jost was surprised, first telling the crowd that he first thought he wasn’t miked properly, and then thought, “Oh, I just suck.” Still shocked by the incident, Jost told Che that he was “evil” and that was the “meanest thing” he’s ever done to him.
Jost let the audience know that he was “covered in sweat” and “shaking” due to Che’s prank. For the rest of the sketch, Jost was visibly flustered even after the crowd began laughing and cheering for his jokes.
