Though David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara has been one of the most talked-about films of the holiday season, its box office release was a real downer, as it was blown away by Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, starring Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner, which topped the four-day holiday weekend figures (Friday – Monday) with $46.2 million.
Believe it or not, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo did not come in second, or even third, for the long weekend. It trailed behind the Sherlock Holmes sequel, A Game of Shadows, which dropped to position two in its second weekend of release, with $31.8 million for the long weekend and $90.6 million to date.
Third at the box office was another second-week release, the family-friendly sequel, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, which brought in an estimated $20 million for the holiday weekend, bringing its two-week total up to $56.9. In fourth place was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which slipped in just behind Chipwrecked with $19.4 million for the four-day weekend.
Other relative box office disappointments included Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin, which came in at fifth place, and Cameron Crowe's We Bought a Zoo, starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson, at sixth. The anticipated War Horse with Jeremy Irvine and New Year's Eve with its all-star cast, trailed in positions seven and eight, respectively.
