Mexico Seeks To Set World Record For Biggest Selfie, Guinness Refuses

Mexico is known for setting world records — from the largest shrimp cocktail, to the largest parade of classic cars, and even the largest display of public nakedness. This time the country’s capitol Mexico City is trying to set a new world record: the worlds biggest selfie.

MEXICO CITY ATTEMPTS TO  SET WORLD RECORD FOR BIGGEST SELFIE

Nearly 2,000  people gathered at Mexico City’s Monumento a los Niños Heroes determined to set the Guinness World Record for the largest selfie, but unfortunately, their goal was not achieved. “I’m not judging that event,” Guinness World Records judge Alexander Angert said. “That’s not a record that we’re measuring.” It turns out that Guinness has yet to create a category for “worlds largest selfie” with specific requirements and rules. The event organizers Record Selfie failed to mention that very important detail in hopes of gathering a large crowd.

Kristen Ott, the Guinness World Record public relations manager for North America, told GlobalPost there’s no current title holder for what Mexico’s trying to do. “But Mexico could win a Guinness World Record for most people tagged in a selfie,” she said. The photo must be posted on Facebook and have the most participants tagged. The minimum requirement consist of 225 tagged people.

Seeing as they couldn’t set the record for biggest selfie, Mexico attempted to set the record for the longest chain of selfies taken. Guinness will be judging their selfie soon.

The first Guinness World Record that Mexico set was in 2007, when American photographer, Spencer Tunick gathered more than 18,000 people at Zócalo in Mexico City to photograph the largest display of people in the nude.

Another Guinness World Record set by Mexico was the largest shrimp cocktail – about 33,000 shrimps were used in the cocktail. The glass itself took four months to manufacture.

In 2014, Mexico also set the record for the largest parade of classical cars. Nearly 250,000 people in Mexico City witnessed the record for the largest parade of classic cars broken with a new number of 1,674.
