Meryl Streep’s Trump Slam Sparks Heated Exchange Between Meghan McCain & Billy Eichner

Meryl Streep‘s publicized condemnation of president-elect Donald Trump at the 2017 Golden Globes sparked much discussion and debate. In her acceptance speech, Streep said: “The person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.” Streep was referring to a Trump rally in 2015 in which he mocked a New York Times reporter for a condition that crippled his joint movements.

After Streep’s denouncement, Meghan McCain, a Fox news co-host, criticized her by tweeting: “This Meryl Streep speech is why Trump won. And if people in Hollywood don’t start recognizing why and how — you will help him get re-elected.”

Billy Eichner, comedian best known for his TV show Billy On The Street, tweeted back: “Um she asked him not to make fun of disabled people and advocated for the freedom of the press and the arts you f–king moron.”

 

The conversation only escalated from there, with McCain retorting, “calling Republicans like me “fucking morons” is a great way for Hollywood to bridge the cultural divide. Enjoy your bubble.”

Eichner didn’t back down, and quipped: “I rather live in a bubble than live with people who don’t feel a need to respect the disabled, freedom of speech & the arts!!” When McCain didn’t respond promptly, Eichner called out her father, Senator John McCain. Eichner tweeted: “Love being told I live in a bubble by the daughter of a millionaire politician who sometimes guest co-hosts Hoda and Kathie Lee.”

 

The dispute didn’t end there, with the two engaging in a few more heated exchanges. And considering the man they were arguing about, it should be no surprise that the conversation took a nasty turn.
