Meryl Davis and Charlie White became the first U.S. pair to win gold in ice dancing at the Winter Olympics in Sochi on Monday after performing a record-breaking free skate.

Meryl Davis And Charlie White Win Ice Dancing Gold

White, 26, and Davis, 27, delivered a stunning performance, winning their first gold medal, and the first gold for Team USA in Olympic history. In 2010 they won silver in Vancouver; Canadian pair Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir earned silver, with Russia’s Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov taking the bronze. White and Davis have had a friendly rivalry with the Canadian pair, Virtue and Moir, for years. They even train together with shared coach, Marina Zoueva. After event, Moir told reporters that no athlete likes to be in second place, but knowing Davis and White makes it easy to be happy for them, saying, “No athletes like it to sit in this position. We came here to win the competition. But it’s easier when we see them and know how hard these guys work.”

Both Davis and White took to their respective Twitter accounts to thank their fans for their support after their big win.
