Melissa Rivers To Sue Yorkville Endoscopy; Dr. Gwen Korovin Still Receiving Patients – Report

Melissa Rivers reportedly plans to sue the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic that allegedly allowed her mother Joan Rivers to undergo an unauthorized biopsy that led to her death.

Melissa Rivers Suing Clinic

Rivers, nearly a month after her mother's death, is going forward with her plans to sue the Upper East Side clinic, a friend told the Daily Mail. “It’s very difficult to discuss something so unpleasant with her, but she is going to launch a lawsuit,” the friend told the U.K. newspaper.

Dr. Gwen Korovin, an esteemed ear, nose and throat specialist, accompanied Rivers to the clinic for her routine surgery on Aug. 28. Conflicting reports suggest that she either performed an unscheduled biopsy or that she performed multiple laryngoscopies, the last of which caused her vocal cords to seize up. Korovin was not certified by the clinic and was only authorized to watch on as gastroenterologist Dr. Lawrence Cohen performed and endoscopy.

Dr. Cohen stepped down from his position as the medical director at Yorkville Endoscopy following Rivers’ death.

Korovin came under fire last month when it was alleged that she had not only performed an unauthorized biopsy, but that she’d taken a selfie with Rivers’ while the Fashion Police star was under anesthesia. Korovin, who treats the lies of Celine Dion, Hugh Jackman, Lady Gaga, Daniel Radcliffe and Ariana Grande, has reportedly continued to see clients in light of the current controversy.

“Gwen S. Korovin, M.D. is a highly experienced, board certified otolaryngologist. She maintains privileges at one of the city's most prestigious hospitals. She is respected and admired by her peers in the medical community and she is revered by her patients,” reads a statement from Korovin’s lawyer, Michael Kelton. “As a matter of personal and professional policy, Dr. Korovin does not publicly discuss her patients or their care and treatment. Further, Dr. Korovin is prohibited by state and federal confidentiality laws from discussing her care and treatment of any particular patient.”

Kelton added, “For these reasons, neither Dr. Korovin nor her attorneys will have any public comment on recent press reports regarding her practice. We ask that the press please respect Dr. Korovin's personal and professional policy of not discussing her patients, as well as the privacy of her patients.”

Rivers went into cardio and respiratory arrest during her surgery at Yorkville and was subsequently rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was placed in a medically induced coma and kept alive on life support. She died on Sept. 4 at age 81.
