Melissa Rivers says she is keeping her “fingers crossed” as her mother, Joan Rivers, continues to fight for her life after being placed in a medically induced coma on Thursday, Aug. 28.
Rivers, 81, went into cardiac arrest Thursday during an outpatient surgery and was rushed to a New York City hospital, where she is currently being treated. Rivers’ only daughter, and frequent collaborator, Melissa rushed to New York to be by her mother’s side. Over the weekend, rumors that Melissa was unable to cope with her mother’s condition began to spread. Sources claimed that Melissa was “in denial” about the severity of her mother’s condition, saying that she was slowly unraveling as Rivers’ health deteriorated.
“[Melissa] still thinks everything is going to be OK. She is refusing to admit that a world might exist without her mother in it. Others that are close to Joan are starting to realize that the outcome they want is very unlikely,” a source told New York Daily News.
Another source added that Melissa was completely devastated by her mother’s condition, saying that she was “totally hysterical and…at a loss for what to do.”
On Sunday, Melissa released a statement, expressing her hope that her mother would recover, saying “Thank you for your continued love and support. We are keeping our fingers crossed.”
And, a source close to the situation refuted rumors that Melissa was unable to cope with her mother's condition, insisting that Melissa has been the one keeping Rivers’ friends and family strong during this difficult time. “She is a rock. She is calmer than I’ve ever seen her. All these reports about doomsday are not true. She is her mother’s daughter and she’s tough as nails. She’s the person keeping everyone together,” the source told E! News.
It had been reported that Rivers had been put on life support, but a source says that Rivers is actually slowly getting better: “It’s a slow process, but she’s on the road to recovery. She’s getting better. Don’t believe all this ridiculous speculation.”
