Melania Trump’s Parents, Viktor & Amalija Knavs, Sworn In As U.S. Citizens In New York City

First Lady Melania Trump‘s parents became U.S. citizens on Thursday.

Slovenia natives Viktor and Amalija Knavs were sworn in at a ceremony in New York City. The couple, who are green card holders, have reportedly been living in the U.S. for several years.

“I can confirm they are green card holders and legal permanent residents of the United States,” the couple’s attorney Michael Wildes said about them in February.

President Donald Trump has long blasted family-based immigration laws, calling such “chain migration” provisions dangerous for the country because they can lead to terrorism and other types of crime.

The news regarding Melania’s parents also comes amid the White House’s latest effort to limit legal immigrants’ access to citizenship and green cards, especially for those migrants who have benefited from government assistance like child health insurance or Obamacare. Some 20 million legal immigrants could be affected. Trump adviser Stephen Miller is said to be behind this measure, which follows several attempts by the administration to curb illegal immigration by separating families at the border and keeping children in detention facilities.

The 48-year-old first lady has been an American citizen since 2006, five years after she became a permanent resident.

According to CNN, experts believe the Trump administration’s efforts to limit options that provide a path to naturalized citizenship, like visa sponsorships and green cards, could reduce immigration to the U.S. by approximately 40 to 50 percent.
