Melania Trump opted for a timeless patriotic look at husband Donald Trump‘s presidential inauguration on Monday, wearing a custom double-breasted navy coat by American designer Adam Lippes and a matching boater hat by Eric Javits.
The ensemble reflected a classic and sophisticated style, with Lippes expressing his pride in dressing the First Lady for the historic event.
“The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor to dress our first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump,” Lippes said in a statement. “Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world.”
Melania completed her look with black leather gloves and dark blue suede pumps, complementing President Trump’s navy coat. Ivanka Trump also made an appearance at the morning’s church service, donning a forest green skirt suit and a coordinating hat.
The First Lady’s choice to spotlight American designers aligns with her previous inauguration look in 2017, when she wore a custom Ralph Lauren ensemble. The powder blue cashmere dress and cropped jacket with a mock-neck collar paid homage to Jackie Kennedy’s iconic style. She paired the outfit with matching Manolo Blahnik pumps and gloves, rounding out the tribute.
For the inaugural ball that evening in 2017, Melania wore an ivory off-the-shoulder gown by French-American designer Hervé Pierre. The gown featured a slit skirt, ruffled accent trim, and a slim red ribbon around the waist.
Reflecting on the experience, she said, “It can be a daunting task to choose an outfit that will be mesmerized and become part of our nation’s story and forever history.”
Following the event, Melania donated the gown to the Smithsonian’s “First Ladies” exhibit, joining a long tradition of presidential spouses contributing their inaugural attire to the national collection. The exhibit includes gowns from First Ladies dating back to Martha Washington.
