In her first public venture outside the White House, former First Lady Melania Trump is getting in on the latest cryptocurrency trend.
Trump first announced the launch of the platform, which is powered by conservative social network Parler, earlier this month. Yesterday, she tweeted a link to the site, announcing that their first NFT, “Melania’s Vision” will be available until December 31.
Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, are a new digital format that establishes ownership of an art piece linked to a blockchain, which is a database that allows for cryptocurrency transactions. Some NFTs have gotten huge price tags attached to them and attracted the interest of many celebrities.
The NFT itself is a watercolor-style painting of Trump’s eyes on a white background. The art was designed by Marc-Antoine Coulone, and the statement on the website reads that the artist’s “breathtaking watercolor embodies Melania Trump’s cobalt blue eyes, providing the collector with an amulet to inspire.”
This inspiring amulet will currently run you about $174, which is attached to the fluctuating value of one SOL, the listed cryptocurrency they are using for the platform. Interested buyers must create a Digital Wallet compatible with SOL’s blockchain platform Solana, which then allows them to add the currency and purchase what they want.
While many artists have commended the creation of a new way to sell their work, NFTs have also been criticized due to the potential environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining, lack of regulation that allows for scammers to sell other’s work as NFTs, and the high volatility of crypto markets and applications.
