Former First Lady Melania Trump announced on Twitter that she will serve as Honorary Chair of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation.

Trump will join other first ladies including Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton and Rosalynn Carter in the foundation’s efforts to erect a monument honoring the efforts of the early American movement for women’s equality.

In December 2020, Congress enacted Public Law 116-217 authorizing the building of the Every Word We Utter Monument on Federal land in Washington, D.C.

The monument will commemorate the women’s suffrage movement and the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation is responsible for designing, developing and constructing the monument.

Less than 5% of outdoor monuments in the United States are dedicated to women’s stories. By collaborating with a group of diverse artists, the foundation hopes to keep women in the forefront of our collective memory.

“Commemorating the women – raising their voices – keeps our eyes on the horizon,” said Colorado sculptor Jane DeDecker in a statement on the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation’s website.

DeDecker is a co-founder of the foundation and is the first artist named to the monument’s design team.

“In the footprints of these many women – boot to the hemline of my own jeans – I sculpt so that we all can remember what it took for women to find stride in America,” she said.

In recent years, Americans have called for a greater examination of our nation’s monuments as more and more questions about our history with slavery and systemic racism arise. Confederate statues across the country have been removed or toppled.

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation understands its own position in the cultural conversation surrounding commemorative statues.

The foundation hopes the new monument will “honor our shared past, uplift our diverse histories, and inspire a new generation of trailblazers to continue the march toward full equality for all.”

The Women’s National Suffrage Monument is planned to unveil in the summer of 2027.
