Melania Trump has spoken out after the assassination attempt on her husband on Saturday.

“When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, I realized my life, and Barron’s life, were on the brink of devastating change,” Melania said in a statement. “I am grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband. Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love. Our personal, structural, and life commitment — until death — is at serious risk. Political concepts are simple when compared to us, human beings.”

Her husband’s ear was hit by a gunman, who was killed by Secret Service agents. The shooter was later identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20.

Melania reportedly plans to make a rare public appearance alongside her husband at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next week.

The specific nature of her involvement has yet to be decided, such as whether she will deliver a formal address or be formally incorporated into the convention program.

Throughout her husband’s current campaign, Melania has maintained a relatively low profile, with only a few public engagements since the launch of his third presidential bid in November 2022. These limited appearances include the campaign kickoff event at their Mar-a-Lago residence and a brief showing in March when she accompanied Trumpher husband to cast his vote in the Florida primary.

Melania’s potential return to the spotlight for one of the most high-profile moments of the former president’s campaign comes amidst ongoing speculation about whether she will increase her public involvement in the lead-up to the 2024 general election. She was notably absent from her husband’s court appearances in New York related to the hush money trial earlier this year, and she did not join him for the CNN presidential debate in Atlanta on June 27.

Campaign advisers and close associates have asserted that Melania remains supportive of her husband’s political aspirations and has simply prioritized her focus on their son, Barron.

In recent months, Melania has made occasional appearances at private events: She hosted a fundraiser for the conservative LGBTQ organization the Log Cabin Republicans, at her residence in New York on July 8. Additionally, she attended an April fundraiser at the home of investor John Paulson, alongside her husband.

Earlier this year, Melania announced that her mother had died at 78.
