First Lady Melania Trump announced her first official initiative in May, a year and a half after her husband took office. Trump’s “Be Best” campaign focuses on children’s well-being, social media use, and opioid abuse. The first lady had to delay her campaign when she was hospitalized for a kidney condition a week after her announcement. Trump did not promote “Be Best” in the weeks following her recovery in order to focus on her health, according to her spokesperson Stephanie Grisham. Trump promoted her initiative during her trip to London with her husband earlier this month and was finally able to get it running on Tuesday, July 24, 2018.

For her first stop, Trump traveled to Nashville to visit Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. She met with medical professionals to get educated about neonatal abstinence syndrome — adverse conditions babies experience when they are exposed to drugs, usually, opioids, in the womb. Doctors at the discussion said that pregnant women who are addicted to opioids struggle to get insurance coverage before and after giving birth and sometimes must travel for hours to receive care. Trump said, “I want to continue to learn and believe in starting early to educate young mothers and children about the dangers of drugs. I believe the more we talk about this, the shame and guilt will go away.”

While she was at the hospital, Trump also took the time to meet with the hospital’s young patients and their families. The first lady gave hugs, played with trains, and blew bubbles with the children. After Trump returned to the White House, she released a statement saying that wants to work with medical centers around the country to raise public awareness about the dangers of drug use during pregnancy.
