Mel B Is Not Going To Rehab, She Is Continuing Treatment For PTSD

This weekend, former Spice Girl Mel B gave an interview to British tabloid The Sun about her struggles with PTSD, and was apparently misquoted and misrepresented. The Sun reported that Mel B (Melanie Brown) was going to enter a rehab clinic to treat sex and alcohol addictions. Mel B clarified in a segment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show — that is due to air tomorrow — that her interview with The Sun was “a little bit skewed with.”

In this preview for the former pop star’s appearance on Ellen, Mel B talked to guest host Lea Michele about her plans for therapy and her new memoir Brutally Honest. The star said that she began therapy nine years ago when her father was diagnosed with cancer, but her treatment plan has changed following her father’s death, divorce from Stephen Belafonte, and her diagnosis of PTSD, all issues that are discussed in her book. “I do address a lot of those issues,” Mel B said.  “But you know, no, I’m not an alcoholic. No, I’m not a sex addict. You know, I was with the same person for 10 years and that was quite a turmoil, very intense. That’s all I can say about it. I’d like to say a lot more, but we’re on this show— let’s keep it P.C. But yeah, I address a lot of those issues [in the book] and I did kind of have to ease my pain…I do suffer a lot from PTSD.”

Last year, Mel B filed a restraining order against ex-husband Belafonte who she claims was physically abusive to her for years. Belafonte has denied this accusation. In her statement to The Sun, Mel B said that confronting her issues with Belafonte and her father’s death while working on her book triggered her PTSD and caused her to come to a “crisis point.” Mel B was open about using alcohol to numb the pain, which is “just a way a lot of people mask what is really going on.” She continued, “Sometimes it is too hard to cope with all the emotions I feel. But the problem has never been about sex or alcohol — it is underneath all that.” Mel B said that she is being open about her struggles in an effort to de-stigmatize PTSD.
