While writing a statement in support of Ukraine amidst the country’s invasion by the Russian military, Meghan McCain wrote her father John McCain’s warnings about Ukraine and the Russian President Vladimir Putin he made in several speeches before his death in 2018 were “ignored” by U.S. leadership.
“Everything my Dad ever said to me my entire life about Putin and Russia has come true,” McCain started her Instagram post caption, claiming that McCain said he always saw “KGB” in Putin’s eyes in a famous line in speeches. She also said McCain was “nicknamed one of the godfathers of the Ukrainian revolution,” due to his protesting with Ukrainians during that time. “I am furious he is dead and not here to once again show Ukrainians we are with you. He was so beloved there, a street in Kiev was named after him,” she added.
She said she was “heartbroken” by the current response to the Ukrainian invasion, decrying sanctions announced by U.S. President Joe Biden as “weak.” McCain also said, “NATO must act more aggressively before it’s too late.”
The unprovoked attack on Ukraine was announced by Putin on Thursday. Russia has claimed falsely that the country was being ruled by “Nazis.”
Putin said that any country which attempts to intervene in the invasion, “must know that Russia’s answer will be immediate, and it will lead to such consequences as you never experienced in your history.”
