Following Sen. Dianne Feinstein‘s death on Friday, sources have speculated that Meghan Markle may be in the running to fill her seat.
Conversations about the Duchess of Sussex’s possible ascend into politics began swirling just minutes after Feinstein’s passing at 90 years old.
Although Markle is connected to well-known Democrats like Oprah Winfrey and the Kennedy family, her appointment to the Senate is unlikely.
“Meghan is definitely a long shot, but in the craziness that is U.S. politics these days it’s not an impossibility,” a Democratic donor affiliated with California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) told the Daily Mail. “Crazier things have happened.”
Newsom will ultimately choose Feinstein’s replacement. He reportedly interviewed Markle for a Senate seat in October 2020, while he was trying to fill then-Sen. Kamala Harris‘ spot.
Discussions about who would take over for Feinstein began prior to her death. Newsom has said he intended to replace Feinstein with a black woman.
“He needs to find a woman of color who can do the job for 13 months and will agree to not stand against any of the seasoned politicians who have already thrown their hats into the ring,” the source explained.
“There are not that many women who fit the bill,” they continued. “Which is why Meghan’s name is being bandied out.”
