Meghan Markle has lost the first round of her privacy suit against the British tabloid publisher, DMG Media (formerly Associated Newspapers), and its subsidiary publisher, Mail on Sunday.
The case had a preliminary hearing via video conferencing at London’s High Court on Friday, with lawyers appearing before a judge via video call and Prince Harry and Meghan attending from their new home in Los Angeles.
The former Suits star and now a Duchess of Sussex filed a lawsuit against the British tabloids in April for publishing a private letter she wrote to her father, Thomas Markle.
“Your actions have broken my heart into a million pieces – not simply because you have manufactured such unnecessary and unwarranted pain, but by making a choice not to tell the truth as you are puppeteered in this. Something I will never understand,” Meghan wrote in one extract.
Meghan’s lawyers have been arguing that tabloids contributed to the division in their relationship. The two reportedly haven’t spoken since before the wedding.
“You’ve told the press that you called me to say you weren’t coming to the wedding – that didn’t happen because you never called,” Markle wrote.
After Meghan’s defeat, Mail on Sunday published an article, titled:
“‘This is like a train ploughing into a petrol tanker. A complete disaster’: Legal experts say judge’s decision to dismiss major parts of Meghan Markle’s letter case against Mail on Sunday is a ‘humiliation'”
