No one claimed the winning ticket for the Mega Millions lottery jackpot on Friday night – which had reached $425 million.
While no one matched all six numbers, nine people matched the first five numbers and won $1 million each, according to Paul Otto, the Virginia Lottery’s executive director and Mega Millions’ lead director. The winning numbers were 19-24-26-27-70 and the Mega Ball was 12. If someone had won on Friday, they would have had a cash option of $228 million before taxes.
Mega Millions tickets only cost those trying their luck $1. The odds of one of those individuals winning the loot is roughly 1 in 259 million. In October, Mega Millions reinvented itself to grow bigger jackpots, consequently lowering what had been 1 in 176 million odds.
By the time of the jackpot drawing on Tuesday, the prize is expected to hit $550 million. If it does, it will become the second-largest jackpot in Mega Millions history. In March 2012, the largest Mega Millions jackpot was drawn for $656 million.
