Meek Mill was released from prison on Tuesday after serving five months in jail for failing a drug test, a parole violation stemming from a 2009 drug charge.
Meek Mill, whose real name is Robert Williams, was released from a Philadelphia jail on Tuesday, and was immediately welcomed back by fans of the rapper. Upon returning to his North Philadelphia neighborhood, Mill was welcomed by fans, who staged an impromptu dance party in the streets to celebrate his release.
Mill was sentenced to 3-6 months in jail for a parole violation in July by Judge Genece E. Brinkley. As part of his release, Mill must complete community service and a treatment program – the exact nature of the program is unclear – before performing. While in jail, Mill completed a program on anger management, parenting and a drug treatment.
“Until the defendant completes those components, only then will her honor entertain a motion…for the defendant to be able to travel. This means that the defendant cannot book entertainment gigs,” said District Attorney spokeswoman Tasha Jamerson.
Meanwhile, the hip hop community is celebrating Mill’s release, with rappers French Montana and Drake, among others, wishing him well on Twitter.
