May the Fourth Be With You, the annual Star Wars holiday, was celebrated globally Sunday, May 4.
Star Wars fans, who recently learned who'd be starring in the newest film in the iconic science-fiction franchise, reveled on the holiday through social media and planned events that honored the movies' mythology. Luke, Leia’s and Darth Vadars can be found walking around major cities and light sabers spotted in the hands of passerby.
May the Fourth Be With You has been around since 1979, according to starwars.com. Lucasfilm says that though they had no part in inventing the holiday, they’ve "fully embraced the spirit of fandom that makes the day so special."
Disney used Star Wars day to release the trailer for the new animated series Star Wars Rebels. "In a time of darkness, when fear ruled the galaxy, heroes will rise, destinies will collide and a rebellion will ignite,” says a voiceover in the show’s trailer. Rebels takes place sometime between the events of Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope.
Returning for Star Wars: Episode VII are original stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo. Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and Kenny Baker (R2-D2) are also coming back for the newest installment. Joining the veterans are Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max Von Sydow.
J.J. Abrams will be directing Episode VII, which will come out sometime in 2015.
