Oscar-award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey joined host Joy Behar on The View to promote his new book, Just Because. The two were having a heart-to-heart conversation surrounding the book.
McConaughey even gave a foot massage to Behar. Following the Q&A, Behar mentioned McConaughey’s potential run for governor in his home state of Texas.
McConaughey began by acknowledging his role in politics. “As far as office, I will always measure what category I can be most useful,” the actor said.
Behar jumped in, referring to McConaughey’s activism following the deadly 2022 school shooting in his hometown state, Uvalde.
McConaughey jumped into the conversation on gun control following the murder of 19 students at Robb Elementary School – McConaughey’s comments aligned with those stated by Taylor Swift and Viola Davis, advocating for gun regulation.
Behar took the opportunity to ask about McConaughey’s stance on guns. “Do you think you can get elected in Texas, being anti-gun?” asked the host.
McConaughey remained silent, only to break it by pointing his finger in Behar’s face. “One thing about me and politics is, to give you a direct statement right there is me playing a game I’m not interested in playing,” he said.
Behar urged him not to say anything if he didn’t want to.
Co-host Sunny Hostin later addressed the heated interaction between Behar and McConaughey.
“I did want to say that I’ve done a lot of research in terms of your advocacy,” said Hostin to McConaughey. “And I don’t know that you’re anti-gun, I think you’re pro-gun responsibility and legislation.”
The show proceeded to unveil a wax figure made in honor of McConaughey.
