Matthew Lawrence Says ‘Oscar-Winning Director’ Asked Him To Pose Nude In Exchange For Marvel Role

Actor Matthew Lawrence, 43, revealed that there have “been many times in my life where I’ve been propositioned to get a huge role,” while discussing the double standards of the MeToo movement and “prevalent” abuse of power in Hollywood.

During an episode of Brotherly Love, the podcast Lawrence cohosts with his brothers Joey and Andrew, the Boy Meets World alum claimed to have once been fired from an agency, after refusing to comply with an acclaimed director’s requests in exchange for a role.

“I’ve lost my agency because I went to the hotel room — which I can’t believe they would send me to — of a very prominent Oscar award-winning director who showed up in his robe, asked me to take my clothes off, and said he needed to take Polaroids of me. And then if I did X, Y, and Z, I would be the next Marvel character,” Lawrence told his brothers. “I didn’t do that, and my agency fired me because I left this director’s room.”

While he did not name the director or the agency in question, Lawrence gave his unfiltered opinion of Hollywood to explain the “double standards” when men come forward with allegations of sexual assault or harassment. “It is a real thing, the casting couch. We all know it’s existed. We’ve all been somewhat complacent towards it. I know I have a responsibility for that and you guys do as well,” Lawrence said to his brothers.

While acknowledging that “it’s probably about a third of what women go through,” Lawrence believes the abuse of power is a “two-way street” and that “men go through this as well, whether it’s another woman or another man in power.”

“Not a lot of guys, in my opinion, have come out and talked about this in the industry,” the former child star said before going on to discuss Terry Crews, who filed a sexual assault lawsuit against Adam Venit for allegedly groping him at a party in 2016, as an example.

“Terry Crews comes out and says it; people are laughing at him. People don’t support him. They kick him out. Why? Because he’s a man that represents masculinity, and I think our society is less ready to hear that situation going on with men than they are with women,” Lawrence concluded.
