Why Was Matt Lauer Fired? NBC News Sites Inappropriate Sexual Behavior With Co-Worker
Disgraced Today show host Matt Lauer has apologized following the sexual misconduct allegation brought against him.
Lauer was fired yesterday from NBC News after a female co-worker filed a complaint against him for sexual harassment. Others have since come forward. On Thursday, the anchor provided a statement of apology to CNN. “There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions,” he began. “To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry.”
In the statement, he also denies some of the claims against him, but takes responsibility for others. “Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly,” he said.
After losing his job, Lauer is also at risk of losing a ranch he recently bought in New Zealand for $9 million. He had been one of television’s highest-paid stars, making $25 million each year. In February, the newsman bought a 27,000-acre lakeside farm in Wanaka on the country’s South Island. New Zealand is wary of selling land to foreigners and the state requires the purchaser be of “good character.” The government “is aware that allegations have been made in relation to Matt Lauer and that he is no longer working for NBC News,” says New Zealand’s Deputy Chief Executive Policy and Overseas Investment Lisa Barrett. “We are discussing this with his representative and are seeking further information.”
There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC.

Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It’s been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by the people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace.”
