Matt Damon spoke about his upcoming Bourne 5 film in a new interview.

Matt Damon Speaks on Jason Bourne and ‘Bourne 5’

“There’s been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyber warfare and civil liberties,” Damon told EW.

The present serves as the backdrop for this story, in which Bourne resumes his quest for answers about his past. “We find him in a dark and tortured place,” the actor explained, who agreed to resurrect the role of Bourne for returning director Paul Greengrass.

Damon previously revealed that the fifth film in the series, based on the novels by Robert Ludlum, will pick up 12 years after Bourne’s disappearance in The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), which was set in 2004.

The film also features Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander, playing a cyber specialist; Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones, who plays a hardened CIA agent; Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) and a returning Julia Stiles as Nicky Parsons.

Bourne 5 is set to premiere in theaters Jul. 29.
