Matt Damon Debuts Ponytail At ‘The Great Wall’ Event, Shocks Internet

Matt Damon debuted a new ponytail at an event to promote his upcoming film, The Great Wall, on Wednesday, hoping on the man-bun craze.

Matt Damon Has A Ponytail

Damon showed off his new look at a promotional event in Beijing for The Great Wall, a film that is set during the construction of the Great Wall of China. The film is listed on IMD as in production, so it’s more than likely that Damon’s ponytail is for the film.

Damon’s casual, yet sleek, ponytail has received quite a lot of buzz. Some reports have speculated that Damon is wearing extensions to create the trendy look, noting that a few months ago Damon was spotted rocking his usual short hair. Meanwhile, the Internet is having fun commenting on Damon’s new hair do, likening his look to everything from Jared Leto’s famous man-bun to the prince in Beauty and the Beast.

The Great Wall: The Biggest U.S.-China Co-Production

The Great Wall also stars Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and Andy Lau, and is directed by famed Chinese director Yimou Zhang (House of Flying Daggers). Damon stars as William Garin, a European mercenary who travels to China with his sidekick, Pero Tovar (Pascal), presumably to fight supernatural creatures determined to attack China. No doubt Damon’s character will cross paths with Jing Tian’s Lin Mae, the female lead, an aerial warrior who heads an all-female team.

With it’s $150 million budget, The Great Wall marks U.S. and China’s biggest co-production and, with an international release already set for November 2016, the predominantly Asian cast film could mark a turning point for Asians in cinema.

“This is the first time something like this is being attempted by a director like me who doesn’t speak English. If this film succeeds, it’s going to open a whole new space for U.S.-China co-productions, and it might inspire other forms of collaboration,” Zhang said at the event.
