Matt Bomer has been a leading favorite to play Christian Grey among fans of the Fifty Shades of Grey erotic novel series since the movie adaptation was announced in early 2012. Bomer recently addressed the casting news regarding author E.L. James' characters and the Change.org petition for him to have the role.
When it was announced that Charlie Hunnam would assume the role of Christian, the young wealthy seducer of student Anastasia Steele, many fans were outraged. Instead of the lithe, dark haired, blued eyed Bomer, they got Hunnam – best known for starring in Sons of Anarchy in which he’s often disheveled and sporting a blond beard. In the eyes of a number of fans, it was Bomer who epitomized the character they read about in the books. Gilmore Girls actress Alexis Bledel, according the petition, would also make a far better Anastasia than the chosen Dakota Johnson.

Over 40,000 people have signed a Change.org petition that demands Christian be recast in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. An excerpt from the petition reads: “Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE…So please PLEASE, all of the GREYsessed and Bomerettes in the world NEED those actors. They always will be for us the Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. WE CAN DO ANYTHING GUYS, ANYTHING.”
Bomer was at the premiere of White Collar’s fourth season when reporters pressed him about his feelings regarding the casting, and the passionate response from his fans. The actor diplomatically responded, “I’m so grateful for the fans and touched. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie with Charlie and Dakota.”
It’s unknown whether Fifty Shades of Grey producers approached Bomer for the part, or if they had, whether or not he declined the offer.
