Warner Bros. is in the development stage of a relaunch of 1999 classic The Matrix, according to sources.
Thus far, the original Wachowski siblings who directed the original are not involved in the project, but they could potentially become part of it later on. Warner Bros. would like to get their approval to do the reboot at the very least. Original producer Joel Silver sold his rights to all his movies to the studio in 2012 for around $30 million, so his involvement would reportedly at most be limited.
Talk of starring Michael B. Jordan in the film has come up, but all casting at this point is hearsay.
The first film was released in March 1999 with low expectations from then-named Andy and Larry Wachowski (now Lilly and Lana Wachowski). The ground-breaking special effects and the original story landed it at the top spot of highest grossing R-rated films in North America that year. It also won four Academy Awards.
Two sequels followed, though neither was as well received. Star Keanu Reeves has expressed less-than-enthusiastic interest in a reboot, but only if the Wachowski siblings were involved. “They would have to write it and direct it,” he said. “And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?
There is no set date for production and, like the planned Matrix television show last year, could still be canceled. While many believe the story should be untouched, those at Warner Bros. were encouraged by what happened when Disney took over Star Wars, and were able to touch on facets of the originals that weren’t delved into for a series of new films.
