The Matrix is getting a remake. Warner Bros. is reportedly in the early stages of creating a reboot of the 1999 cyberpunk classic.
The wildly successful franchise earned Warner Bros. over $1 billion at box offices worldwide, and helped launched Keanu Reeves into a legend of action movies.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the studio has its eyes set on Creed star Michael B. Jordan to lead in the reboot. However, if the reboot is to be realized, it’ll be missing a major element, since creators of the original films, Lilly and Lana Wachowski, are reportedly not involved. And it seems like the original star Reeves himself would be unlikely to return for the reboot, as he had indicated that he would be willing to return if the original directors were involved.
There’s no set date for the remake to start production yet, and the project could still get canceled, like the planned Matrix TV show was.
The Matrix, released in 1999, followed a computer programmer named Neo (Reeves) who faces the unsettling realization that humanity is living in a simulated reality. Neo then becomes the hope for humanity’s salvation. The film redefined how action movies would be made, with its groundbreaking CGI and martial arts. It spurred the production of two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, neither of which lived up to the hype of the first movie, but still drew in impressive revenue at the box office.
