Jared Hess‘ latest heist comedy Masterminds debuted a new trailer and set a release date on Tuesday.
Months after its release date was pushed back, Masterminds is finally set to hit theaters Sept. 20. When Relativity Studios filed for bankruptcy last fall, there was a growing suspicion that the film would never see the light of day. But the production company has returned with four more scheduled releases this year.
The film was originally slated to star Jim Carrey, but he later dropped out due to scheduling and budget conflicts. Based on the true story of the 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery, the film follows Zach Galifianakis as a bank vault supervisor and Kristen Wiig as his girlfriend, who pull off a successful heist and run away to Mexico. According to an early review by Empire Online, “the film strains in two different directions, half trying to stay true to its based-on-fact roots, half wanting to ditch all that and become a ridiculous farce.”
No matter how far or how close they stick to the true story, with stars like Galifianakis, Wiig and Owen Wilson, it’s easy to understand the excitement movie-goers felt upon hearing the news that Masterminds would finally hit theaters.
