Mary J. Blige filed for divorce from husband and manager Kendu Isaacs after 12 years of marriage.
Blige filed at Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, citing irreconcilable differences. Their date of separation remains to be determined.
Blige has requested that the court not award Isaacs spousal support, and property details have yet to be worked out, according to the filing, says the Los Angeles Times.
The couple met in 2000, a period where Blige was picking up the pieces from a dark past. She has credited Isaacs with being a saving force who helped her overcome drugs, alcohol and clinical depression among other issues.
Blige’s music started to reflect the bettered conditions of her life, and some fans who loved her darker material weren’t entirely supportive of her newfound contentment.
“First I was hurt …,” she told The Times in 2011. “I can’t get angry at them for saying, ‘We love you Mary, but we’re kinda miserable still.’ I was a little hurt but I understood — they haven’t moved. So many people were angry that I changed [but] so many people stayed with me.”
Blige and her estranged husband, legal name Martin Isaacs, married in a small ceremony in New Jersey on Dec. 7, 2003. They have no minor children together.
