Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones’ Gives Taste Of Upcoming ‘Luke Cage’ TV Series

Marvel’s Jessica Jones Netflix series premiered in its entirety on the streaming service today and early reviews for the comic book show have been overwhelmingly positive. Currently holding a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with one critic raving, “This fall, Jessica Jones may be the show to beat!” Jones already has fans eagerly anticipating planned Luke Cage spinoff series.

Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones’ Gives Taste Of Upcoming ‘Luke Cage’ Series

Jones, which stars Krysten Ritter in the title role, features Mike Colter as Luke Cage, a superstring bar owner with impenetrable skin and super-fast healing powers, who shares some serious on-screen chemistry with the PTSD-suffering heroine.

Speaking to USA Today, producer Melissa Rosenberg says Colter’s physicality matched the character perfectly “but also he manages to say a great deal with very few words. This is someone who conveys strength and power but also a very subtle vulnerability, which is very hard to find.”

We’re given little to no backstory on the mysterious Cage in Jessica Jones, but a troubled past is hinted at and will no doubt be unveiled when the character’s own series premieres some time in 2016. The series began shooting in NYC this September.

In the comics, Cage, who is also known as Power Man, is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, and gains superpowers in the form of unbreakable skin and superhuman strength. The character frequently teams up with fellow superhero Iron Fist, and is married to Jessica Jones, with whom he has a daughter.

Colter told USA Today the series was trying to strike a balance between honoring the comics and giving the character a new spin. “It’s a very fine line between bringing these things that comic-book fans really, really want and also bringing in a modern-day twist,” the actor said. “We’re going to bring in fans who are interested in seeing a good story about a superhero who’s trying to save part of New York.”

Both Colter and Ritter opened up about the close friendship they’d developed while filming. “He was really supportive when I was doing Jessica Jones and now he’s doing Luke Cage and we text all the time and we’ll be doing Defenders together,” Ritter said. “I feel like we’re on this ride together.”
