The conference, titled “The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination,” was also the venue for the director’s announcement about his new film.
The Pope has a strong interest in artists. Scorsese and his wife, Helen Morris, met with the Pope before the conference privately.
Before the conference, Scorsese attended the Cannes Film Festival where his film Killers of the Flower Moon premiered. The movie features Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, who was injured on set while filming. The movie is based on the murders of the Osage Native American tribe and the investigation by the FBI.
Scorsese has done multiple projects based on religion over his career. His 1988 movie The Last Temptation of Christ follows Jesus Christ’s life. He was nominated for best director Oscar for the movie. He also directed the film Silence which is about two priests who go on a journey together. He is better known for his movies that do not focus on religious themes like Goodfellas and Raging Bull.
