Martin Scorsese Film ‘Silence’ To Be Released In Time For Awards Season

Director Martin Scorsese, 73, took nearly 20 years to complete his latest film, Silence, which has been slated for release on Dec. 23.

SCORSESE FILM SILENCE TO BE RELEASED

It was unclear whether the film would be pushed back to 2017, but Paramount Pictures announced Monday that the film will be out in late December and on wider release in January. Starring Liam NeesonAndrew Garfield, and Adam DriverSilence follows Jesuit priests searching for their master in 17th-century Japan, where outsiders, particularly Catholics, faced hardship. The film is based on Shûsaku Endô’s 1966 novel of the same name.

Scorsese often releases his films in the midst of award season, and Silence is sure to be an Oscar contender. The famed director of such films as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas had been nominated 12 times before winning an Oscar for The Departed in 2007.

Silence is Scorsese’s first film since The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013. See Silence in theaters Dec. 23.
