‘The Martian’ First Trailer Released; Matt Damon Debuts As Astronaut Mark Watney

The Martian first official trailer was released on Monday, June 8, following the release of a cute promo introducing viewers to Matt Damon’s astronaut Mark Watney.

The Martian is the highly anticipated adaptation of Andy Weir’s 2011 novel from director Ridley Scott. Damon stars as Mark Watney, an astronaut on a mission to Mars who ends up stranded on the inhospitable planet after a fierce storm. Believed dead by NASA, the botanist decides to “science the s—t out of this.” That means trying to make 31-days worth of supplies last for four years and use his limited equipment to try to contact NASA headquarters.

The trailer also gives fans a look at co-stars Jessica Chastain, who recently starred in the space film Interstellar, Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels and Kristen Wiig. The film also stars Sebastian Stan, Donald Glover, Sean Bean, Michael Peña and Chiwetel Ejiofor. To learn more about the characters played by Damon, Chastain, Mara, Stan and Peña, The Martian also released a special promo shot as Mark Watney’s livestream before launching into space.

The Martian will be released on Nov. 25.
