Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg has spoken about his rumored “Doomsday Bunker.”
Recent reports have claimed that Zuckerberg has a 5,000-square-foot bunker being built underneath his $270 million mansion in Hawaii. Located on the island of Kauai in the Northern Pacific archipelago, Zuckerberg’s compound is 1,400 acres and big enough to contain over 1,060 football fields. According to Wired, Zuckerberg’s Hawaii compound is self-sufficient in terms of water, energy, and food.
In a conversation with Bloomberg about the topic, Zuckerberg revealed, “No, I think that’s just like a little shelter. It’s like a basement.”
He clarified, “We have the basic house that we built, and we built an office out there because I work out there. There’s a bunch of storage space, whatever you want to call it, a hurricane shelter or whatever.”
“I think it got blown out of proportion as if the whole ranch was some kind of Doomsday bunker, which is just not true.”
Many have commented that Zuckerberg’s having a shelter in case of a hurricane seems similar to having such a doomsday shelter in case of a disaster—especially as the effects of global warming, a known cause of hurricanes, threaten the world’s natural environment.
Plans for the bunker show a living space, a mechanical room and an escape hatch, which is only accessible by ladder. The door is also reportedly made of metal and concrete to be blastproof. Contractors for the bunker were allegedly required to sign an NDA to work on the project.
Zuckerberg’s extensive purchase of Kauai land has angered many locals, who have lost land to Zuckerberg’s sprawling properties. In 2016, Zuckerberg’s shell company quietly sued over 500 co-owners of the Kuleana Islands, forcing them to sell their shares. Land on the Kuleana Islands has been passed down through families since the 1850s.
