Mariah Carey was the lead performer at Times Square in New York for this year’s NYE ball drop. However, things did not go as planned when the singer experienced technical problems on stage.
Carey’s performance was a trending topic on social media, with many expressing their disappointment and dismay at the poor quality of the show.
The singer was the closing act on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. She
2016 has been a bad year for the star, so the performance only added to that. In the past year, Carey has seen her engagement to Australian billionaire James Packer end and started dating her back-up dancer, Bryan Tanaka.
Sound problems appeared during Carey’s appearance, beginning with her take on the New Year’s Eve classic “Auld Lang Syne.” Seconds into that number, it became clear Carey could not hear the backup vocals heard on the live broadcast. This made her frustrated and made for an awkward performance.
The singer said that there had not been a sound check for her hit song “Emotions,” and lamented that “we’re missing some of these vocals, but it is what it is.”
“Let the audience sing,” Carey declared as she paced the stage.
“I’m trying to be a good sport here,” she said, adding her own sarcastic review of the performance.
The next song, “We Belong Together,” went no better. She even lowered the microphone from her mouth and the music, vocals and all, kept playing, making it clear she was lip-synching.
“Well, Happy New Year! We can’t hear, but I’ll just get through the moment,” she said.
“Unfortunately there was nothing she could do to continue with the performance given the circumstances,” Carey spokeswoman Nicole Perna said today.
Carey later tweeted about the night:
Twitter exploded with comments about the performance, which indeed secured Carey a headline in the news.
