Mariah Carey’s Mother & Estranged Sister Who Sued Her Die On Same Day
Mariah Carey is mourning the loss of her mother and sister, who both died on the same day over the weekend.
“My heart is shattered by the loss of my mother this past weekend,” Carey said in a statement. “In a devastating turn of events, my sister also passed away on the same day.”
The singer expressed gratitude for having spent time with her mother in her final days. “I’m thankful I had the opportunity to be with my mom during her last week,” Carey added. She requested privacy as she navigates this difficult period.
Details surrounding the causes of death for Patricia Carey and Alison Carey have not been disclosed.
Patricia, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was formerly married to Alfred Roy Carey. The couple had three children: Alison, Mariah and Morgan. They divorced when Mariah was three years old.
Mariah’s relationship with her mother was complex, as detailed in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. The singer described their bond as “a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”
Despite their turbulent history, Mariah maintained contact with her mother. In 2010, they performed a duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” for an ABC Christmas special.
In her memoir, Mariah acknowledged her mother’s efforts, writing, “To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
Mariah’s relationship with her sister Alison was also strained. In her book, the singer revealed that she had chosen to distance herself from both Alison and her brother Morgan for her emotional and physical well-being.
