Mariah Carey was looking for redemption after she was flubbed her lip-sync performance at last year’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square.
Her return to Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve was a bit of a letdown after a year of waiting. She sang live two of her best-known power ballads to ring in 2018, but her singing is not what people remember of the performance. “I just want a sip of tea if they’ll let me,” she said to the crowd as the clock approached midnight. “They told me there would be tea. Oh, it’s a disaster. Ok, well, we’ll just have to rough it,” she continued. “I’m gonna be just like everybody else with no hot tea.”
“Vision of Love” and “Hero” were the songs of choice, and Carey was clearly singing live, unlike last year. Her instrument sounded lovely, but it seems people no longer watch the New Year’s Eve show for the vocals. “And that is why she is Mariah Carey,” said host Ryan Seacrest once she finished singing. But of course, viewers and Internet users only remember the hot tea moment.
“The first time life throws you a curve in 2018 just remember: Mariah Carey made it through without her hot tea. You can make it through too,” one Twitter user wrote. “Mariah out here with no hot tea proving that humans can overcome anything. May your 2018s be bright,” said another.
Even Carey herself got in on the fun. “Found my tea!” she tweeted with a photo of her sipping from a tea cup, and of course sporting the $10 million engagement ring from ex James Packer.
