Mariah Carey’s fans were underwhelmed – and obsessed – with her performance the this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The star sang her classic Christmas anthem “All I Want For Christmas Is You” at the parade, holding her microphone in one hand and a pink umbrella in the other. Dancers surrounded the singer while she stood, almost motionless throughout the song.
Fans took to social media to laud Carey and share their amusement at her low-energy performance.
Some fans pointed out that Carey was lip-syncing, which is apparently common practice for singers at the parade. In 2018, John Legend tweeted that the festive floats “don’t have the capacity to handle the sound requirements for a live performance.”
Still, people had a field day on Twitter.
Her fans marked this moment as the official start of the holiday season as the icon kicked off the Christmas festivities with her performance.
Carey’s fans may deem her the “Queen of Christmas,” but the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ruled otherwise this month. She filed a petition in 2021 to trademark the name, but the board denied her request, as well as the monikers “Princess Christmas” and “QOC.”
In a statement, the board called the attempted trademark “wrong” and accused the singer of “abject materialism.”
That hasn’t stopped almost everyone from branding her their personal Christmas Queen.
